C O M EPIC EVENTS It’s been a banner year for Janesville in terms of large-scale events—and that has translated into a significant economic boost for the region. BY LAURA BARTEN ECONOMIC IMPACTS: EVENTS ROCK COUNTY is ranked 12TH OF WISCONSIN’S 72 COUNTIES 2019 PRESS TOUR The Janesville CVB and Visit Beloit partnered with the Wisconsin Department of Tourism and Geiger Media to bring 18 top travel and culinary writers to Janesville and Beloit during the week of August 12, 2019. The writers were treated to some of the best experiences our region has to offer and will write articles about their adventures over the coming year. Positive publicity like this serves to attract new tourists and make promoting the region as a hub for future events that much easier. “In two-and-a-half days, we were able to provide 18 writers with 19 different experiences in the Janesville community,” said Christine Rebout, Executive Director of the Janesville Convention and Visitors Bureau. “Our events have been performing exceptionally well and you can definitely see the uptick in interest in the area. A key component of this that can’t be missed is the passionate support we get locally. That makes all the difference.” -Christine Rebout, Executive Director of the Janesville Convention and Visitors Bureau. 2014 2015 2016 2017 2018 Indirect: • Residual tourism spending by event attendees on entertainment and food while attending • Additional accommodations for attendees • Enduring tourism bounce thanks to exposure that leads to repeat visits Direct: • Hotel nights booked by event participants • Local service provider contracts • Local workforce employed to execute contracts • Locally sourced products utilized 10,000 hotel nights booked by event participants* $12 million economic impact* (+$2 million more than 2018) *2019 estimated totals $650,000 * SAFECON May 13-18, 2019 First year National college flight competition and conference that brought 320 college pilots to the region over three weeks. 3,000+ hotel room nights $250,000 * Janesville Town Square Gran Prix June 26, 2019 Year two A day-long cycling event, one leg of the 11-day Tour of America's Dairyland. 492 racers 4,000 day spectators $200,000 * LPGA Janesville Senior Pro-Am August 3-4, 2019 First year of three-year contract Professional LPGA players played alongside local amateur participants in a 36-hole pro-am competition. 30 LPGA Players | 1,000 spectators 150 hotel room nights OVERALL ECONOMIC IMPACT OF TOURISM TO JANESVILLE Visitors spent $145 million in Janesville in 2018, up 2.7% from 2017 Visitor activity sustained 1,200 jobs with income totaling $28.6+ million MORE THAN NUMBERS... • HOT SUMMER HAPPENINGS • 0 10% 20% 30% 40% 50% 60% 70% 80% JANESVILLE OCCUPANCY ANNUAL AVERAGE OCCUPANCY *Economic impact MEETING AND CONFERENCE GROUPS 79 80 166,000 183,000 13,000 17,900 NUMBER OF ATTENDEES NUMBER OF HOTEL ROOM NIGHTS
