Forward Janesville - TheReport - Fourth Quarter 2018

“WHAT SKILL WOULD YOU LIKE TO MASTER?” One skill I have continued to “practice” in an attempt to master is the handstand! I see people who can effortlessly flip from feet to hands and walk across a room, making it look so easy. After too many years of attempts to mention, I ultimately realize that a little support (in handstands and/or in life), be it a wall or a sturdy friend, is never a bad thing! I try and try again, never discouraged, but at this point I am comfortable with both of my feet firmly on the floor. A great lesson to apply to life in general. Ruth Armstrong • Office Administrator I would love to learn German. Mary Terry • FJI Report Designer There are three reasons I want to become an accomplished pastry chef who makes the best crème brulee in Janesville. 1. A typical ramekin filled with crème brulee has more than 400 delicious calories. 2. I get to use a torch in the kitchen. 3. Crème brulee is Lucy’s favorite dessert! John Beckord • President I wish I knew how to fix things…cars, things around the house, etc. I love tinkering, but I often end up screwing things up. I tried to put in a dimmer switch once and ended up frying a bunch of electrical wires (or whatever those do-hickeys are called). Another time I drilled through a water pipe while trying to hang a cabinet in my bathroom, which nearly flooded my apartment. Maybe I should stick to government. Dan Cunningham • Vice President Government Relations & Education I wish I knew how to juggle. Life is a juggling act that sometimes requires that you drop everything. Now imagine life as a game in which you are juggling balls in the air…work, family, health, friends and emotions. What we need to learn is that work is a rubber ball, but the others are made of glass. JoLynn Burden • Vice President of Development The skill/hobby I would like to master is building furniture with my husband. We ventured into this for the first time this year and made two tables and a few benches. Although we struggled, we did pretty well. That said, there is so much to learn and many tools to buy. I want to hone the craft to perfection. Jenny Tschudy • Administrative Assistant I’ve always wanted to learn how to be a finish trim carpenter. Working with wood to create and compliment a space for many to enjoy for years to come interests me. I enjoy sewing, so I feel the concept is a bit similar only with different materials and tools. I love the satisfaction of working with materials, piecing things together and having a tangible finished product representing my talents and effort. Still, it helps when traveling, feels good to be able say a few words and connect (or understand when a local is tourist- weary and swearing under their breath!). I wish I’d learned Spanish. Google Translate is lifesaver, but murder on your phone battery. There are only so many portable chargers I’m willing to carry!” Laura Barten • FJI Report Editor 14 S.
