Forward Janesville - TheReport - Spring 2016

With 2016 being an election year, politics on a national, state and local levels are on the forefront of our minds. Over the next few months, leading up to November, political parties, issues, and personalities will dominate the headlines, but from a historians perspective, it is always fun to look back at the stories of when political icons visited Janesville. Roosevelt, Kennedy, Nixon. The list goes on. The visit we remember the most fondly wasn't even during an election year. In Janesville, we have always hung our Stovepipe hat on Abraham Lincoln's visit with the Tallmans. After all, it was William Tallman that convinced the future 16th President to stay in town to speak to the local Republican Party. Lincoln was taken enough by the Tallman's hospitality that he helped one of their son's, Edgar Tallman get a job in the War Department during the Civil War. A candlestick made from a broken pedestal openwork bowl from the Presidential china set graces the center table in the guest bedroom. The purple color was called solferino, developed in 1959 and one of Mrs. Lincoln’s favorite colors. This rare artifact and other Lincoln art, adorns the walls and tables in the Lincoln-Tallman House, a clear sign of the Tallman's admiration of Lincoln. More importantly than his 48-hour stay, however, were the thoughts and words of Lincoln and how those have resonated with issues affecting Janesville today. The Lincoln-Tallman House, which is cared for by the Historical Society, seeks to make these larger themes relevant to today and focus less on the fact that Lincoln passed through. It is this concept that makes history a tool for change. Axley Brynelson, LLP Bryan Whitehead 2 E.
