Physical fitness is important to me, but working out isn’t just about staying physically fit and healthy. It’s also about staying mentally fit and healthy. The gym is a place where I can breathe, where I can exhale. It’s a place where I can reflect and be in my space. The Wisconsin Idea brought me to Wisconsin. The Wisconsin Idea is more than just graduating students. It’s about changing communities. It’s a powerful idea and one that is amazing to be part of, first at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay and now at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. I was born and raised in Florida. Educated in Florida. And, I spent a good chunk of my professional career in southern states - Florida, West Virginia, North Carolina. I was ready for a change. I hadn’t experienced the changing of seasons and I really wanted to. I was ready for some colder weather. I love the cold. Not so much the snow, but the cold. Since I have been in Wisconsin, the state has exceeded my expectations. And that is because of the Wisconsin Idea and all the beauty the state has to offer, especially during Fall when the leaves are changing colors. I am a baker. I love baking from scratch. It’s something that comes from my mother. She was a firm believer that boys should know how to bake, and I learned alongside her in the kitchen. I especially love baking during the holidays. Lately, I have been experimenting with gluten-free baking so I can share my love of baking with more people. What I love about my job it that it's dynamic. I love being able to touch on education, politics, fundraising, community engagement, and every aspect of the university all at once. It’s a wonderful job. There is something different coming at you every hour. The best part is connecting with students and focusing on student success holistically. The Wisconsin Idea is about educating the whole person and making sure that our students have a sound academic foundation while also having the tools and spirit to be community contributors and problem-solvers. It’s fulfilling to see students succeed while on campus and after they graduate. It keeps us moving. I still live and breathe football. Being from Florida, I am a Green Bay Packers supporter and a life-long Tampa Bay Buccaneers fan. College wasn’t in my immediate path. Neither of my parents graduated from high school, but education was important to them and they always encouraged me to improve myself and work towards something better. To them, education was social mobility. They invested in me and my brother and sisters so we could be the best we could be. I wanted to be a professional football player. It was football all the time! During one game, I was tackled hard and that was it for my mother. She said, no more football. She didn’t want to risk her son getting a concussion. So, I had to change direction. I had a lot of mentors who saw me as a leader. I thought my path in leadership would be in football. But, after that game and no more football, I started to look for other leadership outlets. Most of my mentors were teachers so I started on the education path and here I am today. • Working in higher education is life-long learning. I learn something new every day from a variety of people, both on campus and off campus. It gives me so many insights and leads to so many “a-ha” moments. UW-Whitewater has exceptional faculty, students, and staff. There is always something enlightening happening here. DR.
